EV Safety Showdown: IIHS reveals the safest EVs for 2024; Hyundai Ioniq 6 tops the charts

Toronto, Ontario — According to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 has topped the charts as the safest electric vehicle (EV) for 2024.

This is the second year that the Ioniq 6 has won this award, and the vehicle joins the list with nine other contenders also deemed the safest EVs of the year.

The Ioniq 6 was awarded the top title even with the IIHS’s second-best Acceptable score given for protection in the updated moderate front overlap crash test and headlight performance test categories. The vehicle comes equipped with safety features such as automatic high beams, front automatic emergency braking and blind spot monitoring.

Coming in second on the list is the 2024 Genesis G80 Electric, which achieved Good scores in all crashworthiness tests. The EV hasn’t yet been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), although the standard gas-powered G80 received the highest five-star overall safety score.

In third, the 2024 Genesis GV60 received a single Acceptable IIHS score in latch ease of use. Otherwise, the vehicle received the top Good score in all crashworthiness, headlight and driver assist tests.
