Toronto, Ontario — Volvo has released a position statement that updates technicians on the necessary precautions to take when welding the brand’s electric vehicles.
Specifically, the position statement outlines when to disconnect the 12V and high-voltage batteries and when high-voltage components require removal.
As noted in the report, safety precautions that should be taken include “always disconnecting the 12V battery prior to welding; always de-energizing the high-voltage systems before welding; and, if there is any visible damage to the battery cases, the battery must go to an authorized Volvo workshop.”
Additionally, “if the welding must be carried out in the immediate vicinity of an electronic unit/high-voltage battery, then the electronic unit/high-voltage battery must be removed.”
Finally, the position statement offers safety details and suggestions, including remembering that “all batteries, 12V and over, are to be considered as highly dangerous,” as well as understanding that “no high-voltage-related components may be disassembled unless otherwise stated in VIDA.”
