Toronto, Ontario — Ford Motor Company is planning to slash production of the F-150 Lightning next year to half its current levels.
This pullback comes just months after Ford completed factory upgrades that increased production capacity to 150,000 Lightning trucks per year.
In August, Ford resumed production of the F-150 Lightning at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan after a six-week hiatus used to increase the capacity of the facility to the 150,000 model units number.
Now, Ford is informing its suppliers to expect about 1,600 F-150 Lightning trucks to come off production lines per week next year. This reduction represents a 50 percent decrease from the current output of 3,200 per week.
Ford says this reduction is a reaction to “changing market demands” and less consumer interest in electric vehicles.
However, this news comes after F-150 Lightning sales more than doubled year-over-year, reaching 4,393 units in November, helping Ford to see its best month ever in terms of EV sales.
