Edmonton, Alberta — As noted in a recent Global News report, Alberta is looking to expand its recycling program and within this, will be applying a fee to dispose of electric vehicles.
According to the news report, the fee will also apply to solar panels and wind turbines alongside EVs.
In a video detailing the update, Environment Minister Rebecca Schulz noted that the fee will help cover the recycling costs of these products without having taxpayers “foot the bill.”
Additionally, Schulz commented that while the new fees may seem like the province is penalizing green initiatives, the goal is instead to help streamline the decarbonization and green initiative process.
The Canadian Renewable Energy Association further commented that “this is the first it has heard, so concretely, about some sort of fee. We are welcoming of a conversation about what recycling could look like.”
However, despite these claims, the province has yet to provide a fee breakdown.
