Plugging Into 2024: EV claims frequency increases 34 percent in Canada, says Mitchell’s 2024 Plugged-In: EV Collision Insights

Toronto, Ontario – According to Mitchell’s Plugged-In: EV Collision Insights 2024 Year in Review, electric vehicle (EV) repairable claims frequency has increased by 34 percent from 2023.

Specifically, when looking at Mitchell’s data, EV claims frequency for collision-damaged, repairable battery electric vehicles (BEVs) rose to 3.84 percent in Canada compared to an increase of 2.71 percent in the United States. These statistics represent a year-over-year increase of 34 percent and 38 percent respectively.

Additionally, according to Argonne National Laboratory and Electric Autonomy, there are now over 100 different BEV models sold in the U.S. and 75 in Canada.

And, when looking at BEV total loss frequency, the report indicates an increase in Canada from 5.9 percent in 2023 to 8.7 percent in 2024.

At the close of the year, the average total loss market value for BEVs was $33,346 in the United States—down 22 percent from 2023—and $40,203 in Canada—down 18.5 percent from 2023.

For repairable BEVs, the study continues by noting that average claims severity was $6,236 in the U.S. in 2024, a year-over-year decrease of three percent. In Canada, average claims severity was $7,241, a year-over-year increase of two percent.

Finally, when looking at mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids, these vehicle types had an average severity of $4,726 and $5,583 respectively in the U.S. and $6,104 and $6,261 respectively in Canada last year.

In comparison, repairable internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles had the lowest average severity of all powertrains in 2024 at $5,066 in the U.S. and $5,576 in Canada.

However, when looking at just newer ICE vehicles—which are similar to electrified alternatives in their complexity and cost to repair—average severity was much closer to that of BEVs and plug-in hybrids: $6,127 in the U.S. and $6,818 in Canada.

Overall, the top five BEV model claims frequency in Canada is as follows:

  • Tesla Model 3: 32.72 percent, down 8.03 percent
  • Tesla Model Y: 25.91 percent, up 4.60 percent
  • Hyundai Kona EV: 4.53 percent, down 0.91 percent
  • Chevy Bolt: 4.43 percent, down 0.79 percent
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E: 4.19 percent, up 0.77 percent

And, the top North American BEV markets based on repairable claims frequency is as follows:

  • British Columbia: 7.46 percent, up 2.11 percent
  • California: 5.59 percent, up 1.17 percent
  • Quebec: 5.68 percent, up 2.17 percent
