EV Expectations: Analysts predict Canada will still meet EV sales goals despite rebate suspension

Ottawa, Ontario — Despite the Canadian federal government’s recent decision to pause electric vehicle rebate initiatives, reports from industry experts instead claim that the country is still on track to meet its EV goals.

Notably, in an online statement originally made to The Canadian Press, Cara Clairman, founder and CEO of Plug’n Drive, a not-for-profit organization promoting the use of EVs, commented that while the goal is ambitious, the decision to pause incentives doesn’t change anything in terms of the overall direction that the country plans to go.

Clairman continued by pointing out that when looking at statistics from Transport Canada—which shows that 13.5 percent of new motor vehicle registrations in the country last year were for fully electric or plug-in hybrids—the “stats show you that actually, (electric vehicle adoption) is on the up and up.”

While Clairman acknowledged that the recent suspension by the federal government will cause a slow down period, she believes that ultimately, the country is on track to meet its 2030 goals.
