Toronto, Ontario — At a Tuesday media event with Subaru and Mazda Motors, Toyota showcased an in-development engine adaptable to different biofuels.
According to Reuters, Toyota displayed in-development 1.5 litre and two litre engines with significantly reduced volume and height versus current engines and that can be used in cars from hybrid vehicles to those running on biofuels.
For Toyota, this recent development aims to decarbonize internal combustion engines by making them compatible with alternative fuel sources such as e-fuels and biofuels, rather than relying solely on the future sales of electric vehicles (EVs).
“With these engines, each of the three companies will aim to optimize integration with motors, batteries and other electric drive units,” the automakers said in a joint statement.
Toyota further noted that its new 1.5-litre engine will achieve volume and weight reduction of 10 percent versus its existing 1.5-litre engines.
To date, Toyota has not commented on when these new engines will be released, however, in January, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda commented that EVs would reach a global auto market share of 30 percent at most, with hybrids, hydrogen fuel-cell and fuel-burning vehicles making up the rest.
