Toronto, Ontario — A new survey from Autolist says consumers prefer a the yet-to-be-unveiled Toyota Tacoma EV over the Ford F-150 Lightning.
While the Toyota Tacoma EV hasn’t launched yet or even been revealed or announced, 3,600 car shoppers surveyed by Autolist from August to November still picked the theoretical vehicle as the most popular EV pickup in the company’s annual Electric Truck survey.
The Ford F-150 Lightning—which previously held the top spot on the list for the past two years—fell to second place this time around, with 24 percent of respondents saying that they’d most likely buy a Toyota Tacoma compared to 19 percent in favour of the Lightning.
These models were followed by the Chevy Silverado EV at 15 percent; the Tesla Cybertruck at 14 percent; the Ram 1500 REV at 9 percent; the GMC Sierra EV at 8 percent; the GMC Hummer EV at 6 percent; the Rivian R1T at 5 percent; the Canoos pickup truck at just 0.4 percent; and the Bollinger B2 at just 0.35 percent.
Autolist suggests that the reason the Toyota Tacoma EV topped rankings despite not existing has to do with the automaker’s reputation for reliability coupled with some other factors.
“Affordability is always an important consideration for vehicle shoppers, especially during these times,” says Jodi Lai, editor-in-chief, AutoTrader. “But when it comes to a milestone purchase as important as a vehicle, Canadians aren’t necessarily sacrificing spend. Although vehicle prices were higher this year, it didn’t stop shoppers from seeking aspirational vehicles, and while purchases skewed more practical, the emphasis wasn’t only on economical options, which could indicate prices aren’t as much of a deterrent as they were last year.”
