Bécancour, Québec — A joint project between General Motors and POSCO Future M has been approved for funding from federal and provincial governments, as the pair begin construction on an EV-battery materials processing facility in Québec.
The forces behind what will come to be known as the Ultium CAM facility, set for Bécancour, Que., confirmed in late May that $600 million in funding—half from the federal government and half from Québec—will be committed to the project, which aims to further strengthen the province’s EV supply chain.
The plant is expected to be in production by the first half of 2025 and create about 200 full-time jobs for the local community, in addition to providing vital “cathode active material” (CAM) to be used in GM Ultium EV platforms.
This project will also aid in the OEM’s goal to build one million Ultium platforms by 2025 by supporting its many brands operating in the EV sector, including GM’s emissions-free delivery division, BrightDrop.
“This investment in GM-POSCO’s new facility in Bécancour will help further position Québec as a key hub in Canada’s growing EV supply chain,” said Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne.
