America on the Up: U.S. EV sales reach four million

Washington, D.C. — According to data from Atlas Public Policy, electric vehicle sales in the United States reached the four-million mark at the end of June 2023.

For reference, it took approximately eight years to sell the first million EVs, and it took a further 32 months to hit two million. The third million was reached in 15 months; the fourth, 10 months.

Tesla, General Motors and Rivian all reported strong U.S. sales and deliveries for Q2 2023.

“There’s no doubt that the pie for EVs is getting bigger,” said Atlas founder Nick Nigro. “Tesla sales are growing…everybody’s sales are growing. That’s the sign of a strong market.”

Tesla makes up about 61 percent of the United States EV parc. General Motors, by comparison, takes up four percent.

Despite the increased rate of adoption in America, electric vehicles comprise about ten percent of new vehicle sales.
