Legislation Lock-outs: Toronto politicians propose plan to bar Tesla from city’s EV licensing fee grant

Toronto, Ontario – The mayor of Toronto, Olivia Chow, has put forward plans to bar Tesla from the list of vehicles eligible for the city’s licensing fee grant for electric vehicles.

This licensing fee grant specifically applies to cab and limo owners in the city to encourage them to acquire a zero-emission vehicle before 2030; the legislation does not apply to companies such as Uber and Lyft.

The decision to bar Tesla vehicles from this agreement is proposed to go into effect on March 1, 2025, with the goal of combatting ongoing tariff threats coming from the United States.

“For now, the best we can do is send a message to the White House,” said Chow during a recent council meeting.
