Dashboard Development: Federal government and ZEV Council creates dashboard for Canadian EV charging station data

Toronto, Ontario — The Canadian federal government and Transport Canada through the ZEV Council have released the ZEV Council Dashboard, which provides quarterly updates on Canada’s EV market share; data on incentive program uptake; information on the deployment of charging and hydrogen refuelling stations and federal investments in the ZEV space.

This online tool aims to show consumers and industry members data from several different sources across the country for light, medium and heavy-duty EV adoption and charging station availability.

Of all the provinces, the database reports that, as shown in Q1 2024, Quebec and British Columbia were in the lead in Canada in terms of EV adoption at 28.3 percent and 22.7 percent respectively.

Market penetration of light-duty EVs was also high in the Yukon in Q1 2024 at 11.4 percent and was the third highest-adopting jurisdiction in Canada in the quarter. Following this, Prince Edward Island came in at 8.2 percent, with Ontario following at 7.9 percent.

The Yukon also led in the medium and heavy-duty EV vehicle market, with a 4.2 percent increase in adoption in Q1 2024. In second place in this category was Quebec at 3.5 percent.

In total, the database shows that Canada had 418,000 new battery-electric passenger vehicle registrations. Additionally, iZEV rebate claims totalled more than 160,000 between 2023 and 2024 year-to-date.

When looking at charging availability, the national average—when including battery-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles—is 24 EVs per charging port.

Of all the provinces, once again, Quebec is in the lead with 4,114 stations. Here, the breakdown further includes 1,577 DC fast charger ports and 8,126 Level 2 ports.

Across the country, the government has funded 46,244 charging ports. The vast majority, however, are in development or planning stages.

Formed in 2023, the ZEV Council, which facilitates the information, aims to “speed up the switch to zero-emission vehicles.”
