Sparking Safety: National Fire Protection Association releases EV safety tips and tricks

Toronto, Ontario — The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has released a series of resources, training and safety tips to help provide electric vehicle (EV) knowledge and safe practices.

The NFPA is a United States-based international nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting consumers against fire.

On the NFPA’s educational website, it establishes that, according to the International Energy Agency, “global sales of EVs exceeded 10 million in 2022,” and so, public resources are important in ensuring a safe adoption of the technology.

Some public safety tips offered by the NFPA are, for Level 1 charging, use the charging cord that came with the electric vehicle, use a standard household plug and make sure a charger or outlet has ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection; for Level 2 charging, use a 240-volt outlet installed by an electrician and only use outdoor rated charging stations.

Other resources provided by the NFPA’s website include safety PSAs to be shared by consumers as well as more general frequently asked questions about EVs.
