Toronto, Ontario — A pair of German adventurers are currently pushing Canada’s EV infrastructure to its very limits, as driver Rainer Zietlow and cameraman Elric Popp attempt to travel from St. John’s, N.L. to Victoria, B.C. in a Volkswagen ID.4.
While this is by no means the first documented cross-Canada EV trip, the Deutsche duo are shooting to break the Guinness World Record for fewest number of charging stops made during a trans-Canada EV crossing, according to their website.
The journey kicked off Wednesday from St. John’s east end, and as of the time of publication, the pair have travelled a little more than 900 kilometres, are currently passing through Nova Scotia and have had to stop to charge twice.
“The ID.4, with its excellent battery capacity is ideally suited for this record drive,” Zietlow said.
Volkswagen Canada has voiced its support for Zietlow and Popp’s journey, which upon its completion will see the pair circle back to St. John’s, making stops at all 145 of Canada’s Volkswagen dealerships on the way.
“The future of transportation lies in sustainable, eco-friendly mobility solutions, and Volkswagen is committed to leading the way in this transition. We are proud to support Rainer Zietlow and Elric Popp in their endeavor to set a new Guinness World Record, demonstrating the capabilities of our ID.4 EV and the potential of electric vehicles for long-distance journeys,” said a Volkswagen Canada spokesperson.
