Ingersoll, Ontario — BrightDrop Zevos and their batteries will soon be built in the same place, following Tuesday’s announcement that General Motors will build a battery module production facility on-site at Ingersoll, Ont.’s CAMI Assembly Plant.
The announcement of this 400,000 square-foot facility was made alongside Unifor’s national president, Lana Payne, who expects this project to lead to the creation of 300 new jobs for the Ingersoll community.
“This is good news for Unifor Local 88 members, good news for the community and good news for the economy,” said Payne.
“This investment is another important step in expanding Canada’s EV footprint and good union jobs for the next generation of autoworkers.”
Plans to expand the capacity of what GM calls “Canada’s first large-scale EV manufacturing plant” have underway for some time now, and the automaker says it is hoping the plant can play a “critical role in accelerating GM’s all-electric future,” according to president and managing director of GM Canada, Marissa West.
The Unifor Local 88 chairperson representing CAMI Assembly, Mike Van Boekel, said in a press release that “CAMI members have a proud history as industry leaders and this move into EV battery module assembly provides another opportunity for these workers to be on the forefront of the EV transition.”
General Motors said that it plans to be producing battery modules at this new facility by the second quarter of 2024.
