Toronto, Ontario — Ford published its first On Target collision newsletter of 2023 this week, bearing official OEM repair positions on the F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E SUV, Explorer and Lincoln Aviator, among other technical tips.
This latest repairer newsletter from the automaker opened with a recap on a recent “Repairers Realm” video demonstration from the U.S. division of I-CAR, which delved into specifics around the Ford F-150 Lightning’s material makeup and the locations of its electronic components.
In the video, senior Ford damageability engineer Gerry Bonanni explained that while a significant portion of the electrified pickup is made of identical parts and materials to its gas-powered counterpart, and can thus be repaired in much the same way, unique aspects of the Lightning’s powertrain make themselves known closer to the bed.
Upon removing the truck’s bed, a repairer will find the electric battery inverter, the rear-drive motor, the top of the battery enclosure, the Pro Power OnBoard unit and the dual AC compressors.
Bonanni pointed out that with the presence of cooling systems not seen on any other EVs present in the Lightning’s bed, repairers must take special care to be aware and knowledgeable of the complex electronic components they could end up interacting with.
This latest On Target release also came with a detailed, step-by-step explanation of the removal of front subframes from 2020 to current model year Ford Explorers and Lincoln Aviators, pulled straight from the Ford Workshop Manual.
The full details of the front subframe removal procedure for Ford Explorers and Lincoln Aviators can be found in the newsletter.
As for the Mustang Mach-E SUV, Ford has provided repairers a detailed materials breakdown of the cowl and back panels of the popular EV.
In addition to body-specific procedure reminders, this latest On Target also provided comprehensive information on how the ADAS on many of Ford’s newer vehicles functions.
Thanks to OEM glass developer, Carlex, Ford was also able to offer detailed descriptions on the numerous ADAS functions, and calibration needs, present within the windshields of its most advanced vehicles.
